Dowel Dale Side Pot has broken through into open passage and is now about 60m deep
Dowel Dale Side Pot has been a TSG dig for several years, with the past two years having seen some particularly determined digging by several tenacious individuals, who were finally rewarded with a breakthrough into a large rift. There are two sumps; the upstream sump has been dived for 100m by John Cordingly, but closes down; the static sump has been entered for a short distance by Tim Hallam. A dig has been making good progress in following the stream as it sinks down a boulder-filled rift, although this seems to flood during the winter.
On 4/11/99, the survey of the new extensions was finally connected to the surface on a survey trip following an unpleasant change in the snow. The depth of the survey is 54m, although the (currently flooded) dig at the bottom probably adds a little more depth to this.
The prospects at Dowel Dale are good, with several large shakeholes on the top of the hill, and a resurgence at valley level, which is unfortunately inpenetrable except for a short distance (full of spiders).
