Main Rising, Speedwell Mine

Main Rising is the second deepest sump in the country, going down to a depth of -70.3m; with still much potential and depth to be gained. This is second to Wookey Hole, recently descended to a depth of -75m.

Two TSG members have been actively diving Main Rising for the last two years resulting in last Autumns dive that reached the present limit. Diving in Main Rising is very much dependant on conditions and murky conditions have made progress over the last ten years very slow indeed. The previous good conditions were in 1995 when it was pushed to a depth of -66.5m. Bad conditions resulted in no divers entering the sump until 2002 when diving restarted. 2003 saw the dive to the current limit, as water conditions were great with good visibility in the sump throughout the summer, due to the dry spell that we had during the summer.

Conditions this year have been bad, only one dive has been undertaken and this was in bad visibility; with us crossing our fingers hoping for better conditions in the late summer/early autumn but currently we are still waiting. A trip to look at the sump last week found that visibility was less than half a metre, very murky indeed and making diving not very feasible in this place.

The divers are now waiting for a dry spell, that may result in good/clear visibility and then they will began diving again.
